PROJECTS

An Outline of the History of Cynllun Bro DJ

Aim:

The project aims to extend bilingualism and the use of the Welsh Language within the area (between Mathry in the west, Eglwyswrw to the east and Letterston and Puncheston to the south).

Why?

Because of the support which local people give to the linguistic character of the area and to increase the use of Welsh.

How?

By bringing together people and all kinds of organisations to work in partnership.

As well as local people, the project has the support of the following organisations: Menter Iaith Sir Benfro; Welsh Language Board; Pembrokeshire County Council; Welsh Development Agency; Menter a Busnes; Young Farmers Clubs; the Urdd; PLANED; Theatr Fforwm Cymru; Pembrokeshire College; Ysgol Bro Gwaun and the area primary schools; Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin.

The Two Languages of the Area:

The Welsh language is an essential part of the area’s community life.

Over 40% of the people of the area can speak some Welsh at least.

An increasing number of children in the area learn and use Welsh in the schools, and it is compulsory for children and young people between the ages of 5 and 16 to be taught Welsh.

What the People Say*

Welsh has a future as a living language, according to 94% of the respondents.

Over 80% of people say that it is important that children learn to speak Welsh.

According to 70% of people being bilingual helps you to have work.

How does the Project help?

By responding to the local need and demand for an increase in the use of Welsh.

By bringing together people and organisations for the benefit of the community.

By helping to sustain present events and arrange new ones.

By giving information about bilingual education and Welsh courses for Adults.

By giving information about local Welsh events.

Help us to secure a bilingual future for the area by supporting the project.
